AKC Terrier Dogs ~ The Breeds
Terrier Group General Information |
Feisty is the word most often used to describe the attitudes of the purebred dogs in the AKC Terrier Group. The ancestry of these dogs was to hunt and kill vermin; rats, mice, moles, voles, etc. They are very independent, and typically don't tolerate other animals or other dogs well. Many have wiry coats, and require a grooming technique called stripping, in order to maintain their appearance. Some of the most well known dog breeds in the Terrier Group are Airedales, Miniature Schnauzers, Scotties, and Westies. Terriers make great companions for those who have equally spirited personalities. In general, this group is easy to care for and many have non-shedding coats. |
There are two sub groups of Terriers: long legged Terriers and short legged Terriers. Among the long legged breeds are Airedales, American Staffordshires, Bedlingtons, Border Terriers, Bull Terriers, Irish Terriers, Kerry Blues, Lakelands, Manchester Terriers, Miniature Schnauzers, Parson Russell Terriers, Smooth Fox Terriers, Soft Coated Wheatens, Welsh Terriers, and Wire Fox Terriers. The short legged breeds include Australian Terriers, Cairn Terriers, Dandie Dinmont Terriers, Glen of Imaal Terriers, Norfolk Terriers, Norwich Terriers, Scottish Terriers, Sealyham Terriers, Skye Terriers, and West Highland White Terriers. |
