Overview: The Norwich Terrier, an energetic and playful dog breed, is very owner friendly. This breed is known to be quite friendly with pets, other dogs and even strangers. This terrier breed is very receptive to training. Performing duties as a good watchdog are among its skills. However, it is not recognized as a protection dog. Grooming does require some attention because of its wiry coat. The Norwich Terrier is fairly resistant to both cold and hot environments.

Temperament: Being what can be considered a true terrier the Norwich likes to adventure around and chase small animals. This dog does need an owner that is patient and will spend a good amount of time playing with it. As a companion dog, this breed is best suited for owners interested in both humor and adventure.

History: Hailing from England, the Norwich Terrier has strong connections with the Norfolk Terrier as it originally came from the same family. This dog was quite popular among students at Cambridge University during the 1880s and soon gained the nickname CanTab Terrier. Later the name was changed to Trumpington Terrier. In the early 20th century, one of these Trumpington Terriers, named Rags, was taken to a stable near Norwich and gained popularity as both a ratter Terrier and as a sire. Rags was a patriarch to countless litters and is considered the father of the modern Norwich Terrier. The Norwich Terrier is also known as the Jones Terrier, the name derived from the owner of Rags. The AKC recognized both the Norwich Terrier and the Norfolk Terrier as one breed until 1979. At that time the two were separated based on the type of ears; dropped ears were for the Norfolk and pointed ears were for the Norwich. The Norwich Terrier is a strong competitor in dog shows and has gained popularity in that venue. However it has gained only a moderate amount of popularity as a pet in family homes.

Names: The Norwich Terrier is sometimes known as the Jones Terrier.

Groups: The Norwich Terrier was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1910 and assigned to the Terrier Group.

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Norwich Terrier can be about 10 inches in height and can weigh about 12 lb. This dog has a slightly fox-like expression and has pointed ears that are sensitive. The coat is hard, straight, and lies close to the body. The color of the coat can be any of all shades of red, wheaten, black and tan, grizzle. There may be white marks on the coat as well, but these don’t meet breed club standards.

Care: Daily exercise is needed for the Norwich Terrier which could include a good walk or a run. Another good activity might be exploring in its daily routine. While it can live outside, it is undesirable for the dog and is  best suited to living indoors with access to the outdoors. The coat of this breed needs to be combed twice weekly with stripping of dead hairs four times a year.
