American Staffordshire Terrier Information
Overview: The American Staffordshire Terrier is a muscular, stocky breed of medium size. It is useful as both a watchdog and family protector, though it can be friendly toward strangers. This breed is moderately energetic whose exercise needs can be met by vigorous daily playing with its owners or long walks on a leash. Originally bred in the 19th Century as a bullbaiting and fighting dog, the American Staffordshire Terrier’s main function today is as a companion animal.
Temperament: The American Staffordshire Terrier loves family life and thrives with human contact. Though considered quite intelligent, they are not easily trained. They are good with children, playful and generally docile. Other temperament features are fearless courage, stubborn, affectionate and tenacious. It may show aggressiveness toward other canines.
History: In England, prior to the early 19th century, a longer legged ancestor of the Bulldog was popular for bullbaiting. It is believed that this older, more energetic Bulldog was cross bred to a game terrier, possibly the English Smooth Terrier, resulting in the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The breed was commonly used in dog fighting competitions. During the late 1800s, English immigrants brought the dogs with them to the United States. However, they were bred to a slightly larger size. This larger size was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1936 and the name was changed to American Staffordshire Terrier reflecting the larger American breed in contrast to smaller English breed.
Names: The American Staffordshire Terrier is sometimes referred to by the nickname, Am Staff.
Groups: The AKC recognized this breed in 1936 placing it in the Terrier Group.
Physical Characteristics: American Staffordshire Terriers are typically about 17 to 19 inches in height, weighing in at 57 to 67 lb. The females are generally a bit smaller than the males. It has a short coat that needs minimal care. This is a very muscular dog with strong jaws, high set ears, dark round eyes set far apart.
Care: This is a hardy breed, able to live outdoors. However, it prefers to be inside with its owners where it can receive and give affection. There is not much care needed for its coat as it is quite short, close to the skin and glossy. Because this breed has a high threshold of pain, it may not show visible signs of discomfort from injuries. So, owners should be watchful for any signs of physical problems. Daily exercise is deeded in order to burn off extra energy inherent in this breed.
