| Dandie Dinmont Terrier General Information |
| Overview: The Dandie Dinmont Terrier is quite distinct in appearance as it is about twice as long as it is tall and very short legged with the hind legs longer than the front. Energetic, playful, affectionate and friendly are just some of the attributes of this little hunter. It can be trained but tends to resist. Included among the traits of this intelligent breed are the talents of otter and badger hunting, watchdog, and companionship. |
| Temperament: Reserved yet determined and independent the Dandie Dinmont Terrier can be courageous and tenacious for its small size. As is so common among small terriers, this breed thinks it's a big dog living inside a small dog's body. Showing of affection toward its family contrasts with its wariness or strangers. |
| History: The Cheviot Hills, bordering Northern England and Southern Scotland claims to be the native breeding ground for the Dandie Dinmont Terrier. Dating back to the early 18th Century, this breed appears to be the product of selective breeding by the hunters of the area. Considered a top choice for hunting badgers and otters, the farmers of the area prized this breed and encouraged its breeding. As there was a diminishing need for its hunting skills, this canine breed lessened in popularity but became a loved house dog as it enjoys playing with children and serves well as a guard dog. |

| Groups: Formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in the year 1886, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier is a member of the Terrier Group. |
| Physical Characteristics: Ranging in size from 8 to 11 inches tall at the shoulder and 18 to 24 lb, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier built long and low to the ground. It has a curved silhouette with a tail shaped like a scimitar. Most of its coat on the body is rather hard in texture. In contrast, the hair on its head and tail is silky soft. Hair stands up on the head making a sort of top knot. The coat colors are described only as pepper and mustard but have a range of shades from dark to light. Though not visually apparent because of its coat, this terrier is quite muscular with a well-developed chest. |
| Care: The Dandie Dinmont Terrier can live outside much of the time, but should sleep indoors. Exploring and hunting around are favorite activities of this breed. Exercise can consist of a daily moderate leashed walk. The coat should be brushed or combed every few days and regular clipping and shaping should be attended to. |
