| Skye Terrier Information |
Overview: The Skye Terrier is an affectionate and playful dog. It doesn't need much when it comes to exercise. It is not particularly friendly toward other dogs and pets of any sort. Somewhat receptive to training, it can make an excellent watchdog. It has poor guarding qualities and shouldn't be used as such. Grooming needs a light among of attention every week. It is quite resistant to cold temperatures, but it doesn't like being in hot weather. Temperament: The Skye Terrier is a tough and fearless dog. It is very good at hunting rodents and shows no mercy to them. In the house it is calm and obedient being, perhaps one of the few Terriers mild-mannered enough to live in a city. It does need daily exercise, just not a lot of it. This breed is affectionate towards its master and anyone close to it, however it is guarded and suspicious of strangers. This dog should get along well with dogs it has been raised with, but new and unfamiliar breeds aren't to be trusted. History: Originating in Scotland during the 16th century, the Skye Terrier is considered to be one of the oldest Terriers in the area. Their primary objective was to hunt fox and otter along the west coastal areas. The purest of all the Skye Terriers were to be found on the Isle of Skye leading to its name. It was known for its long coat during the 16th century. There is some confusion in the history as at some point there were some other breeds that were described as Skye Terriers even though they were not the same as today’s breed. What is considered as the modern Skye Terrier became prominent in 1840. At this time Queen Victoria liked this breed owning both with and without pricked ears. This increased the popularity in all social classes leading to it soon being exported to the United States. It wasn't long after this that the AKC accepted this terrier into the rankings. Soon thereafter it became one of the top show contenders. Once at the top, the Skye Terrier lost popularity to the extent that it is now one of the least known among the Terrier breeds. There is a famous Skye Terrier that was so loyal to its master that even fourteen years after the death of its owner it still slept by his grave until it, too, died. A statue was erected in honor of this loyal companion. Names: There is no other name that the Skye Terrier is known by. Groups: The Skye Terrier was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1887 and assigned to the Terrier Group. Physical Characteristics: The average adult Skye Terrier can be 9.5 to 10 inches in height and can weigh between 25 and 40 lb. Built close to the ground, its length is twice its height. The coat that this dog wears is a double. The undercoat is short, close to the body, soft and with a wool-like texture. The outer coat is straight, flat, and hard. The color of the coat can be dove, gray-blue, fawn, and a cream color. Care: As the Sky Terrier is a hunting dog, it likes to explore and examine the outside world. A short to moderate sized walk is recommended for this breed’s daily exercise. It is best to let this dog live indoors as it usually prefers it over living outside. However, it should have access to the outdoors during the day. The coat should be combed twice a week and should receive a bath on occasion. The hair around the eyes and the mouth should be cleaned every once in a while. |
