Overview: The Parson Russell Terrier is a very playful and high energy dog. This breed likes to be around its owner. Generally, it doesn't get along well with other dogs and dislikes other animals. History: In the mid-19th century a dog by the name of Trump was owned by Parson John Russell of Devonshire, England. John Russell enjoyed hunting foxes and wanted to breed a dog that could keep up with his horses and still be able to take on a fox. The breed he created became so successful that it was named after him. Even though John Russell became very active in the EKC he didn't present his dogs in any shows. Fans of John Russell also limited their use of the breed for hunting purposes. This is still true even for today. Dog Fanciers fought to keep this breed out of the AKC, however it was accepted in the Terrier group in 1998. This canine was recognized in the EKC as the Parson Jack Russell Terrier in 1991. Parson is put before the name to signify that the dog has longer legs than the average Jack Russell Terrier. In 2003 the AKC recognized this breed as the Parson Russell Terrier. It has become popular in the media, especially through the television show Wishbone. Because of this, the popularity of this dog grew rapidly.

Groups: The Parson Russell Terrier was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1997 and assigned to the Terrier Group.

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Parson Russell Terrier can be 12 to 14 inches in height and can weigh between 13 and 17 lb. The coat of this dog can be smooth or broken. Regardless of which one it is, the double coat is naturally harsh and thick. It may be colored white, or white with black and tan markings.

Care: A lot of mental and physical exercises are needed every day to keep this dog happy. It enjoys exploring, so it is best to keep it in a safe area. While exploring, this dog may get stuck if it goes into any holes and will have to be dug out. While it does enjoy being inside, it should have access to the outdoors. For smooth coats the dog should be brushed once a week to remove any dead hair. For broken coats it needs the same treatment but with occasional hand stripping included.
