Lakeland Terrier Information
Lakeland Terriers originated in England in the 19th century by farmers to help protect their flocks of sheep from vermin and foxes. They are used mostly as show and family dogs, now. They are well suited for both city and country living, but are quite active so play and exercise are warranted. AKC classifieds them in the Terrier Group.
Lakeland Terrier Information

Overview: The Lakeland Terrier is a very playful and high energy breed who likes to spend time with its owner. This breed doesn't do well around other dogs, animals, or strangers. This is not a very easy to train dog but when it is trained it will make a great watchdog but it won't provide very much protection. It needs a lot of grooming but it can resist cold and hot temperatures.

Temperament: Often a very active dog, the Lakeland Terrier loves to play and explore as well as loving to hunt and chase things. If it has received enough exercise it is a calm and entertaining house pet. It is shy around people it doesn't know and is often aggressive around other animals. This breed is smart but also stubborn and independent. The Lakeland Terrier is sensitive and should be treated with patience.

History: The Lakeland Terrier originated in England during the 18th century for the purpose of hunting small animals that were causing problems for farmers who would take them in packs to hunt down foxes. This breed wasn't only limited to hunting foxes, though, as it was used to hunt otters and other vermin in the surrounding areas. It became popular for that use as it was very successful in its efforts to hunt. When fox hunting became more of a sport the Lakeland Terrier was used for sporting events. This breed was first known as the Patterdale, Fell, and the Elterwater terrier but in the early 20th century it was renamed and recognized as the Lakeland Terrier. Though generally popular in the show ring, it is not acceptance as a family pet has remained limited.

Names: There is no other name the Lakeland Terrier is known by.

Groups: The Lakeland Terrier was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1934 and assigned to the Terrier Group.

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Lakeland Terrier can be 13.5 to 14.5 inches in height and can weigh about 17 lb. The coat of the Lakeland Terrier has two coats, the outer being hard and thin to the touch while the undercoat is soft. The colors available to this breed are solid blue, black, liver, red, or wheat and saddle marked with blue, black, liver, or shades of grizzle.

Care: This dog needs to have exercise daily and attention or it will try to entertain itself. It is good to keep it on a leash when it is outside the property. It is well to let it explore some times as it does get curious. While it does love to play outside it is best suited to sleep inside with its owner. The Lakeland Terrier needs to be brushed about twice a week with trimming four times a year.
