Australian Terrier Information
Overview: The Australian Terrier is a small breed of dog originally bred to control snakes and destructive small animals in the Australian wilderness areas. Developed in the 19th Century, it was dubbed the National Terrier of Australia. It is characterized by its harsh, straight outer coat of blue and tan or solid sandy or solid red, stand up ears and tail, moderate energy, friendly nature and especially its capability as a watchdog. They can live in temperate and warmer climates, are moderately affectionate and enjoy playing.
Temperament: A moderate amount of daily exercise helps keep this fun-loving breed happy. It likes to dig as a result of its original breed purpose of chasing rodents. They are not as prone to bark as most terriers and its desire to please its owners contributes to its obedient nature. Australian Terriers generally do well with other family pets.
History: The Australian Terrier has ancestors in several terriers including Skye, Dandie Dinmont, Manchester, Yorkshire and Scottish Terrier. It is among the smallest of working terriers and hails from the Tasmania area of Australia. It was used not only in killing vermin, but also controlling livestock and alerting its owners to the approach of intruders. This terrier was brought to England in the early 20th Century and then to the United States in the 1920s. It went through a series of name changes such as rough-coated terrier, blue and tan and toy.
Names: Currently, the Australian Terrier is known exclusively by that name.
Groups: The Australian Terrier was recognized as a member of the AKC Terrier Group in 1960.
Physical Characteristics: Short, and longer than its height, the Australian Terrier has pricked-up ears, docked tail, stands about 10" to 11" at the withers and weighs about 12 to 14 lb. It is medium boned, sturdy and has a "weather proof" coat of about 2 ½ inches made up of a soft undercoat and harsh outer coat on its body with shorter hair on the lower legs and tail.
Care: The Australian Terrier requires daily activity to run off some of it energy. This can be done with vigorous play or brisk walks. It can live both indoors or outdoors in moderate climates. The coat should be combed weekly with additional stripping of dead hairs about every six months.
