Overview: The Miniature Schnauzer is quite energetic and has a very loving and playful attitude towards its owner. This dog often enjoys having other dogs and pets to play with and doesn't mind the company of strangers. It is easy to train and has very good watchdog abilities, however its guard dog potential is very low. The Miniature Schnauzer’s coat does need regular grooming but it can resist the cold and the heat very well.

Temperament: The Miniature Schnauzer is considered as one of the most popular of the Terrier breeds as it is playful and considerate with curiosity and compassion. Usually this dog is well behaved. Unlike the other Terrier breeds this one is perhaps the least domineering and territorial towards other dogs. It also gets along better with different animals than others of the Terrier family. The Miniature Schnauzer does well around children and some may bark a lot.

History: This breed made its first appearance as a small farm dog in the late 19th century in Germany. According to records this is the only Terrier that was first bred outside of Europe. The dogs that were mixed together to create the Miniature Schnauzer was the Standard Schnauzer and the Affenpinscher. Perhaps a bit of Poodle was in the breeding, but there isn't any solid evidence of that. The name Schnauzer means small beard and rightfully matches the breed. The Miniature Schnauzer was recognized as its own separate breed in 1899 in Germany, however the AKC didn't accept it until 1933. This breed didn't arrive in the United States until many years after the Standard Schnauzer arrived, but after World War II the Miniature Schnauzer grew far more popular that the standard, even growing to the third-most popular breed at one point. While its popularity has fallen somewhat, it is still among the most sought after family pets and a competitive show dog.

Groups: The Miniature Schnauzer was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1926 and assigned to the Terrier Group.

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Miniature Schnauzer can be 12 to 14 inches in height and can weigh about 13 to 15 lb. This dog has a double coat with a hard, dense outer coat covering a short undercoat. The coats colors are a salt and pepper, black and silver, and a solid black.

Care: A good amount of walking or playing outside can take care of the Miniature Schnauzer's exercise needs. Physically it can live outdoors, but emotionally it needs a lot of human interaction and should live indoors to promote as much of this as possible. The coat should be combed about twice a week and trimmed as needed, usually five to six times per year.
