Overview: An energetic and playful breed, the Smooth Fox Terrier is very affectionate towards its master. It usually gets along well with other dog breeds. It might not do well with other pets. However, it is very friendly towards strangers. It is very accepting of new things to learn and trains fairly well. It makes an excellent watchdog, but it makes a very poor guard dog. Grooming needs are minimal. It is equally resistant to both warm and cold temperatures.

Temperament: Curious, bold, excitable, playful, and adventurous are words that describe the Smooth Fox Terrier very well. It is very affectionate toward its owners. It may be reserved at first with strangers. Digging and barking are no strangers to this canine.

History: While the ancestors of the Smooth Fox Terrier are unknown, it has been established that it was well known by England during the 1800's. Even before that it was used with foxhound packs to chase out foxes that had taken to hiding. Dogs with white coats were preferred in order to tell them apart from the quarry as darkness approached. It is speculated that the Wire Fox Terrier and the Smooth Fox Terrier descended from similar ancestors. The Smooth Fox Terrier coming from a smooth-coated breed mixed with the Bull Terrier, Greyhound, and even some Beagle. This breed was one of the first to enter the dog show ring and was initially classed with the sporting breeds. Breeders often mixed the Wire Fox Terrier and the Smooth Fox Terrier, however that practice has died off and the AKC had the two breeds classified separately in 1985.

Groups: The Smooth Fox Terrier was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1850 and assigned to the Terrier Group.

Physical Characteristics: Alert with a keen expression, this canine has a square proportioned body. It has excellent endurance and can gallop easily to keep up with horses during hunts. The average adult Smooth Fox Terrier is about 15.5 inches in height and can weigh between 15 and 19 lb. The coat is usually smooth, close to the body, yet thick and hard. The belly and undersides of this breed are left bare. White is the predominate color with red or liver marks along the body.

Care: It is very active and will run and play if there is room for that to be done. An active walk or game is enjoyable to the Smooth Fox Terrier and should receive this once a day. It is best if this dog lives inside where it can have social interaction with access to the outside for it to have fun. The coat on this dog only needs to be brushed once a week.
