| Weimaraner Information |
Overview: The Weimaraner is a very energetic and playful dog that enjoys running. It doesn't get along very well with other dogs and pets, and it doesn't like being with people it doesn't know. It is a little difficult to train but with a little patience it can learn. It makes an excellent watchdog, and has great guard dog capabilities. It is easy to care for and easy to groom. It isn't comfortable in cold weather, but it can tolerate warm environments. Temperament: Quite the bold and boisterous dog, the Weimaraner loves to run and hunt. If it doesn't get enough exercise every day it can become destructive and loud. It may be too energetic and excited around children and may begin to play too rough. This dog is best paired with an active owner, especially one who regularly hunts. History: The breeds that originate from Germany have been known as some of the best hunting dogs in the world, the Weimaraner not being excluded. With the desire to create an excellent gun dog, the Weimaraner was created in the 1800's to take down game up to the larger sizes such as deer and bear. The court of Weimer was what sponsored this breed’s creation naming it the Weimar Pointer. Some of the ancestors to this breed include the Bloodhound, the Red Schweisshund, and other breeds with skills in pointing. The gray coat on this dog comes from unknown origins, however the color was seen very early on in its development. Only members of the very exclusive German Weimaraner Club were allowed to own and breed the Weimaraner. It could not be owned by those that weren't club members and it was difficult receive club acceptance. Those of the breed that were unfavorable or came from bad mixes were unregistered and sometimes destroyed, especially those of poor quality. The Weimaraner hadn't left Germany until an American had gained membership into the club and was allowed to bring two dogs with him to the United States in 1929. The early specimens of the American Weimaraner performed very well in obedience competitions causing them to be noticed by dog enthusiasts. As the popularity increased, this breed was noticed for its hunting abilities. Soon after this, AKC accepted the breed for formal recognition. Names: The Weimaraner is also known as the Weimaraner Vorstehhund. Groups: The Weimaraner was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1943 and assigned to the Sporting Group. Physical Characteristics: The average adult Weimaraner can be 23 to 27 inches in height, and can weigh between 55 and 90 lb. Considered to be a medium sized breed, it has a lot of stamina and balance, staying alert to its surroundings. The coat is short and smooth in shades of gray. Care: Daily exercise is needed for this breed normally in the form of a long run or jog. It should have a large open area to explore at its leisure. It can live outdoors when it is warm, however if it is cold it should stay inside. The Weimaraner needs to be brushed occasionally to remove dead hairs. |
