| Vizsla General Information |
Overview: An excellent hunter’s companion, the Vizsla is an affectionate and playful dog that is full of energy and loves to exercise. It gets along well with other dogs and pets, as well as with strangers. It is relatively easy to train as it likes to learn new things. It can make a pretty good watchdog, however it doesn't do well when tasked to guard. Grooming of this dog is quite simple. It does okay in cold weather and doesn't mind warm climates. Temperament: This is a hunting dog that likes to run and chase, always looking out for birds. If not given enough exercise it can become destructive. Many of this breed can be stubborn while others are timid. This dog makes a great addition to those that spend a lot of time outdoors. History: It is unknown what the ancestors of this breed were but it is speculated that it included breeds the Magyars collected during their travels across Europe before reaching Hungary well over a thousand years ago. Documents from the middle ages concerning falconry describe a dog much like the Vizsla. Hunters wanted dogs that were not only good companions, but also could point, retrieve, and even trail animals over thick cover. It is clear that this breed was established by the 18th century having been used by barons and warlords. It appears, however, that the breed had started to diminish during the 19th century and late in that century it had greatly declined. The Vizsla was revived through the efforts of some unknown group not long after this. During World War II this breed was brought to many different places around the world when the Hungarians fled Russian occupation, taking their dogs with them. In the United States this breed became popular among hunters for its abilities in the field. It was not long before the AKC accepted this dog and popularity soon started to grow once again. Names: The Vizsla is also known as the Hungarian Vizsla, the Magyar Vizsla, the Hungarian Pointer, and the Drotszoru Magyar Vizsla. Groups: The Vizsla was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1960 and assigned to the Sporting Group. Physical Characteristics: The average adult Vizsla can be 21 to 24 inches in height and can weigh between 45 and 65 lb. Known for both speed and endurance, it is muscular but not to an extreme. Recognized as a medium sized dog, this breed has a short coat and is robust with a light build. It is both agile and energetic, also being a versatile dog when tracking. The coat is smooth and lays close to the body. The Vizsla is beautifully and uniquely colored with a golden rust coat. Care: A lot of daily exercise is needed in the form of a long jog or a good sized run. It also needs to play games that will work its mind. The Vizsla can live outdoors so long as it is warm, however if it is a cold night it should stay inside. Its coat needs minimal attention, just brushing out dead hairs every once in a while. Soft bedding is recommended. |
