| Silky Terrier Information |
Overview: The Silky Terrier is a very playful and energetic breed that likes to be with its master. It gets along alright with other dog breeds, animals, and even strangers. It is somewhat receptive to training as it likes to learn new things. The Silky Terrier makes an excellent watchdog, however it has poor protection capabilities. It needs a moderate amount of grooming. It is fairly resistant to both cold and hot climates. Temperament: A bold, excitable, playful, and curious dog, the Silky Terrier is always ready for a little bit of action. This dog may be aggressive toward other breeds and pets. Some tend to bark a lot. History: During the late 19th century, England exported Yorkshire Terriers to Australia. While the Yorkshire Terrier had a beautiful blue and tan coat, the native Australian Terrier had a less attractive coat but more robust conformation. Both of these breeds were bred together in the hopes of creating a better looking Australian Terrier. Both the Yorkshire and Australian terriers were more recent in development having been cross breeds with several other terrier breeds. While some offspring of this experiment were separated into Yorkshire Terriers and others as Australian Terriers, there was a new type that was introduced. This new breed was separated from the rest and named the Silky Terrier. After some time a true breeding strain was created. Because this breed was started in two different areas of Australia, there were two standards created for each area in 1906 and in 1910. The major difference for the breed standards was weight. Only a few years later there was a revised standard written up that incorporated both areas and introduced a compromise weight. The breed was known by some as the Sydney Silky Terrier Later, in 1955, the name was changed to the Australian Silky Terrier. In the United States the name was changed to the Silky Terrier, dropping the word Australian in its name, prior to its acceptance into the AKC. This canine now has moderate popularity among the people. Names: The Silky Terrier is also known as the Sydney Silky Terrier, or the Australian Silky Terrier. Groups: The Silky Terrier was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1959 and assigned to the Toy Group. Physical Characteristics: The average adult Silky Terrier can be 9 to 10 inches in height and can weigh between 8 and 11 lb. with no difference between the males and females. The coat of this breed is straight, shiny, and silk-like to the touch. The coat normally follows closely to the body. The colors of the Silky Terrier can be Blue and tan. There are many different shades of blue and the tan is normally deep and rich in color. Care: Because it is an active breed, the Silky Terrier should get more exercise than most toy breeds. A good sized walk should well. Playing vigorous games in an open area is also a good way to let out some energy. It is strongly recommended for indoor living. Its coat needs to be combed every other day. |
