Overview: The Siberian Husky is a breed that enjoys playing and exercising with its master. It gets along well with other dogs and animals and seems to really enjoy meeting new people. It can be quite difficult to train this dog as it does not respond well to learning new things and can be stubborn. It makes a decent watchdog but wouldn't be very good as a guard dog. Weekly grooming is needed. It is very resistant to cold temperatures, however it cannot live in hot environments.

Temperament: This is a playful and fun-loving dog that likes to go on adventures. It is also clever and mischievous. The Siberian Husky loves to run and explore when it can. It may act aggressive toward other breeds that it doesn't know, but it gets along well with familiar dogs. This canine is very social and needs both human and other canine interaction on a daily basis. It may chase cats and livestock with which it is not familiar. Some members of this breed tend to howl, dig, and chew.

History: The Siberian Husky was bred by the Chukchi people in northeast Asia. While the breeds it derived from are unknown, it is clear that it came from the Spitz family and slowly evolved into a sled dog used by the nomadic people. During the gold rush years in Alaska dogs became both a source of living and entertainment for the people. Dog racing became a favorite pastime. Some races, like the All-Alaska Sweepstakes, would go on for over 400 miles. In 1909 the first team of the Siberian Huskies was used in these races. Being a smaller breed than the others in the competition not many people looked highly upon this dog save for one racer who had 70 of these dogs imported to train for next year’s race. The three teams this man assembled using this breed took first, second, and fourth place that year. This showed that the Siberian Husky was unrivaled for these kinds of conditions. However it wasn't until 1925 that the breed accomplished its greatest feat. Teams of Siberian Huskies traveled 340 miles to deliver medicine to help those ill with diphtheria in the city of Nome, Alaska. This act was said to be the sole reason for saving the people. A statue was erected in honor of this accomplishment in the Central Park, New York. The AKC recognized the Siberian Husky not long after its arrival in the United States. The breed had an important job during World War II serving as search and rescue dogs for the United States which further increased the admiration the people had for it. It still remains one of the most popular Arctic breeds to this day.

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Siberian Husky can be 20 to 23.5 inches in height and can weigh between 35 and 60 lb. It is characterized by immense endurance, good speed, and power to pull loads for miles without rest. This canine carries a double coat that is of medium length with a furry look to it. The Undercoat is soft and thick. The colors the Siberian Husky can be found in are black and white, black, white, Agouti, gray, silver, piebald, copper, light red, or black and tan.

Care: The Siberian Husky is a very active and energetic dog that can run for miles without getting tired. As such it needs to have a large amount of exercise throughout the day with a long jog or a long run. It loves cold weather and should not have lengthy exposure to warm climates. It is best if it lives inside with its master and given access to the outdoors. Its coat needs to be brushed twice a week and daily when shedding.
