| Overview: The Shar-Pei is a breed of ancient origin. It is easily identified by its folded skin with harsh coat and hippopotamus type head shape. This is a breed of good energy that can serve on guard duty or help with livestock herding all day long. It does not exhibit much affection and is not particularly friendly, especially toward other dogs and strangers, which helps qualify them for both watchdog and guard dog assignments. |
| Temperament: Serious minded, confident and stubborn, the Chinese Shar-Pei is not easily trained. However, it is loyal and protective of its owner. Originally bred for fighting and as a livestock dog, it may chase other animals and be aggressive toward other dogs. |
| History: Some authorities believe the Shar-Pei's ancestors date back to about 200 B.C., the time of the Han Dynasty. The actual history of the breed is hard to find because many historical records of China were lost after the communist regime commenced. It is thought that this breed was used for dog fights, livestock and general farm dog duties. Much of the breed was exterminated, along with other dogs, attributable to the communist rule. However, some dogs survived in more remote areas and in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Arriving in the United States in the late 1960s and in 1973 an article was printed claiming the Chinese Shar-Pei was on the brink of extinction. This heightened interest in the breed and since it has gained in population and popularity. |
| Names: Often referred to as the Chinese Shar-Pei, this breed is also known as the Chinese fighting dog. |
| Groups: The American Kennel Club recognized the Chinese Shar-Pei in 1992 placing it in the Non-Sporting Group. |
| Physical Characteristics: The name Shar-Pei translates into English as sandy coat, which aptly describes its fur as it is course and sticks out straight from the body. Its blue-black tongue is similar to the Chow Chow breed which is also from China and the only other breed with that color tongue. At birth, the Shar-Pei is covered with wrinkles. As it matures the wrinkles usually disappear except for on the head, neck and shoulders. The coat may be up to one inch in length and can be of any color, even a very striking shade of blue. The jaws are wide and powerful. Its ears are small, set on top of the head, and the eyes are sunken. |
| Care: The Shar-Pei should be exercised daily. Its coat may be brushed weekly. However, the folds in the skin and ears should be cleaned regularly to help fend off bacteria build-up which can cause odor and even infection. |
