Overview: The Poodle has a lot of energy and a very playful attitude. It enjoys being with its owner. This dog gets along with other dog breeds and loves to be around other animals. Strangers make this dog nervous at first, but once it gets over being nervous it is friendly towards people it doesn't know. The Poodle is easy to train as it loves to learn and catches on quickly. This breed can make an excellent watchdog, and has a good aptitude for guarding. Grooming takes true determination on the owner’s part with this dog. The Poodle is relatively resistant to both cold and hot environments. 

Temperament: The Poodle is considered to be one of the most bright and well-mannered of breeds. Because of its hunting origins it loves to run, swim, and even retrieve. It likes to be around people and enjoys playing with others. It is often nervous around strangers at first. This dog is good to have around children. 

History: Although the Poodle is associated with France, its origins are probably in central Asia. The curly-coated dogs in that region would assist with herding and would travel along the routes in and throughout Europe. There are several water dogs that were known to have rough coats that appear to be in the Poodle's ancestry. It is believed that the first Poodle was the Barbet. This dog was a curly haired breed that was distributed throughout France, Russia, Hungary, and several other geographical locations. It is the type that came from Germany that gained the most popularity among the people. Even the name, Poodle comes from German word Pfudel, meaning puddle, or to splash. This was a direct reference to its  water talents. In France it is known as Caniche, or Chien Canard. Both of these names refer to the dogs duck hunting abilities. The hair on the Poodle is usually cut away to imitate a swim suit idea while the puffs on the legs and tail are believed to represent the days it was used in the circus. This dog became popular with fashionable ladies and became a great companion to them. The French aristocracy found this breed favorable and made it the national dog of France. Poodles entered dog shows in the late 19th century. Some of the earlier Poodles used in the shows had corded coats. This fashion didn't last long, however, and was replaced with the bouffant styles still being used today.   

Names: The Poodle is also known as the Barbone, or the Caniche. 

Groups: The Poodle was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1887 and assigned to the Non-Sporting Group. 

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Poodle can be 15 to 21 inches in height and can weigh between 45 and 65 lb. The coat of this dog is either curly or corded. If it is curly, it is rough in texture and thick. If it is corded, it is in tight cords of various lengths. The colors of the coat can be blue, gray, silver, brown, cafe-au-lait, apricot, or a cream color. Each color listed can be in different shades. The coat is considered non-shedding.

Care: The Poodle requires a large amount of human interaction. It also needs to have a good amount of physical and mental exercise daily. It is recommended to do an obedience session followed by playing or taking the dog for a vigorous walk every day. The Poodle shouldn't live outdoors. This dog needs to be brushed every day if it has long hair, and weekly if it has short hair. The dead hair on this dog doesn't just fall out as it gets tangled in the rest of the hair and can cause matting.
