Overview: The Pembroke Welsh Corgi has a fair amount of energy that needs to be expended with exercise which it enjoys doing. This dog is very affectionate towards its owner and loves to play. It gets along well with other dog breeds and other animals. This canine may be shy around strangers but doesn't mind them that much. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi loves to learn new things and is easy to train. It has great potential and talent in being both a watchdog and a guard dog. Grooming is pretty simple. This breed is fairly resistant to both cold and hot environments.

Temperament: The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is very active in both body and mind. It requires both physical and mental exercises to keep it occupied throughout the day. It is loyal to its owner and loves to play with him. This dog usually does well with children, but may nip at heels when it is playing as it tends to herd them. It may act shy around strangers. Many of this breed bark a lot.

History: Originating in South Wales during or before the 11th century, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi was a great help to the local farmers. It was used primarily for herding cows. However. it is assumed it drove sheep and even ponies. The first records of this breed come from a book dated in the 11th century. There are no details in the book as to its origins, but it was used for herding animals back then as well. While it does share its past with the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi was bred separately from the Cardigan, in Pembrokeshire, Wales. During the time that the dog shows were beginning to be held the Pembroke Welsh Corgi was hard at work in the fields. Not until the early 20th century did the first of this breed enter the show arena. The first entrants were straight from the farm and didn't gain much of a look from dog fanciers. After some efforts on a club’s part to make the breed look better, the dog began to receive popularity in shows. There was some point of concern for the judges as this breed looked a lot different from the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. The major differences were that the Pembroke Welsh Corgi was smaller, its features were sharper, had more of a fox-like expression, and didn't have a tail. In 1934 the two breeds were recognized separately. At this time the Pembroke Welsh Corgi gained in popularity, so much so that both King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II favored it. By the mid-20th century the breed had become one of the most popular dogs in the world. Since then the popularity of this breed was fallen a little but it is still strong.

Groups: The Pembroke Welsh Corgi was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1934 and assigned to the Herding Group.

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Pembroke Welsh Corgi can be 10 to 12 inches in height and can weigh between 25 and 27 lb. The body is low to the ground, but is strong and sturdy. The coat of this breed is considered to be of medium length. The undercoat is short and dense and can resist many types of weather. The outer coat is even more dense than the undercoat and rough. The colors of the coat can be red, sable, fawn, black, and tan with or without white markings. It can also be white with red or dark markings.

Care: A daily herding session would do well to meet this dog’s exercise requirements. If herding is out of the question, then just going on a long walk would do. While it can survive just fine living outside by a physical standard, it is best mentally if it lives indoors with its owner. Access to the outdoors would be best in any event. Brushing once a week to remove any dead hairs is needed.
