Overview: The Lhasa Apso is a playful dog that shows love towards its owner. This breed gets along well with other dogs and other animals. However, it does not like being around strangers. It is not necessarily easy to train but when it has been trained it can make an excellent watchdog. It does not have very good protection capabilities. The Lhasa Apso needs regular grooming. Its coat helps this breed of canine tolerate cold environments.

Temperament: Regardless of it looking like a small and innocent dog, the Lhasa Apso is stubborn and cocky. It does like to exercise, however it doesn't need much before it is satisfied. A good walk or just playing with it should suffice. The Lhasa Apso likes to be around its owner while it is sleeping. It is shy when it is around people it doesn't know.

History: Believed to have originated in Tibet during ancient times, the Lhasa Apso has no record as to how, when, or why it was first bred. With its history tied in to the religion of Buddhism, it is connected to reincarnation. It is believed that the souls of lamas enter the bodies of this breed when they die. This dog was used as a watchdog for monasteries alerting when there were visitors. This action lead to the original name of this breed, Abso Seng Kye, meaning bark lion sentinel dog. It has yet to be determined when or why the name was changed from Abso Seng Kye but it is recorded that when the breed first entered England it was known as the Lhassa Terrier, even though it has no resemblance to the Terrier class. The first of this breed was seen in the United States during the early 20th century with some of the dogs being gifts from the 13th Dalai Lama. When the Lhasa Apso was first accepted into the AKC it was placed into the Terrier group but was moved to the Non-Sporting group some time afterward.

Names: There are no other names that the Lhasa Apso goes by.

Groups: The Lhasa Apso was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1935 and assigned to the Terrier Group but in 1959 was reassigned to the Non-Sporting Group.

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Lhasa Apso can be 10 to 11 inches in height and can weigh between 13 and 15 lb. The coat of this breed is straight and heavy, while being hard and dense. The colors are golden, sandy, honey, dark grizzle, slate or smoke as well as black parti-color, white or brown.

Care: While this dog is energetic it is easy to use up its energy with short walks or just playing with it daily. It does not do well living outdoors and should stay indoors as much as possible. The coat requires brushing every other day.
