Overview: The Havanese is a very playful and affectionate dog with a lot of energy and a need to use it. It is very friendly with other dogs and animals and gets along great with strangers. This breed is very easy to train into being a good watchdog but it does have poor protection abilities. The Havanese is somewhat resistant to the cold and can resist the heat very well.

Temperament: Being the center of attention is where the Havanese loves to be. It loves to play around with almost everyone that it notices and gives its affection to just about that many people. This breed does, however, tend to speak aloud and a lot.

History: Originating in the Mediterranean during ancient civilizations, The Havanese was commonly given as gifts for women in Cuba creating a trading agreement. In Cuba this dog was made to be the pet of the wealthy. When this breed was brought back to Europe it was called the White Cuban and it became quite popular with the people of Europe as performing dogs. The breed’s popularity started to wane to the point that it was almost considered extinct not only in Europe but also in Cuba. It did, however, remain popular as a trick dog with circuses. A few Havanese still lived on in Cuba and were brought to the United States in the mid 20th century where it started to show signs of becoming popular once again.

Names: The Havanese has two more names associated with it. The Bichon Havanais, and the Havana Silk Dog.

Groups: The Havanese was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1996 and assigned to the Toy Group.

Physical Characteristics: The average height of an adult Havanese is about 8.5 to 11.5 inches with a weight of 7 to 13 lb. It has a double coat with the only difference between the coats would be that the outer coat is heavier than the undercoat, otherwise both coats have long hair and it is wavy with a soft texture. The colors available for this breed are be cream, gold, white, silver, blue, black, and tricolor.

Care: Giving this breed a good amount of time to play should be sufficient enough to release most of its pent up energy for the day. The Havanese shouldn't live outside but inside where there are people that it can associate with. It should be brushed two to four times a week. Any loose hair will get tangled in its outer coat and should be combed out to avoid tangles.
