Overview: The Great Dane is not known to have a great deal of energy and isn't very playful. However it does love its owner a great deal and is quite loyal. It doesn't get along very well with other dogs or other animals but it does like to meet strangers. This breed is somewhat easy to train and can become a very good watchdog and has decent protection abilities. There is little grooming needed with the Great Dane and it is somewhat resistant to both cold and hot conditions.

Temperament: A kind and understanding dog, the Great Dane loves its owner and is good with children, however it could be overwhelming to small children if not supervised. It responds well with training and makes a great friend.

History: Its true origin is unknown as there is no record as to when it was bred. But the Great Dane’s ancestors were used for both hunting and war. During the 14th century this breed was used mainly for hunting big game which is what it was bred for and proved to do that relatively well. The British once called this dog the German Boarhound as it was used to take down boars. It is still unknown as to when and why this canine was named the Great Dane as it had nothing to do with the Danish people or nation of Denmark. This breed was bred in Germany and as such in the late 19th century the Germans demanded to have it known as the Deutsche Dogge which is the name that it is still known by in Germany and surrounding areas. The Great Dane arrived in the United States during the late 19th century and quickly grew in popularity.

Names: The Great Dane has two other names by which it is knowny; the Deutsche Dogge, and the German Mastiff.

Groups: The Great Dane was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1887 and assigned to the Working Group.

Physical Characteristics: The average height of an adult Great Dane can be between 31 to 35 inches with an average weight of 100 to 180 lb. The single coat of this dog is short and smooth. The colors of the coat can be brindle, fawn, blue, black, harlequin, and mantle.

Care: This canine needs to have daily exercise, usually taken care of by a walk or just letting it play outside. This breed doesn't do well living outside and should stay inside with the option of going outside for exercise and some fun. The coat of the Great Dane is easy to maintain as it stays relatively clean and short. Brush and clean when needed.
