| Overview: The Finnish Spitz is an energetic dog with a lot of affection and playfulness towards other animals and people. This canine would make an excellent watchdog as well as a protection dog. It is resistant to the cold but doesn't like heat very much. The Finnish Spitz is a very good choice for people who exercise and play outside a lot. |
| Temperament: Unlike the other Spitz breeds the Finnish Spitz enjoys hunting. It is a curious and playful dog and is dedicated to its owner. While good with children and other pets it can act aggressive toward unfamiliar dogs and reserved toward strangers. The Finnish Spitz can be a loud dog and is, in fact, prized for that. Its bark is used as part of its hunting technique. |
| History: Spitz-type canines have an ancestral heritage that dates back several thousand years. Some speculation exists about the Finnish Spitz breed's actual origins. Some believe it came to Finland from central Russia as tribes migrated into the Scandinavian countries. During the 19th century the dog was bred for hunting purposes of game birds and even larger animals such as bear and elk. The present day name for this breed was decided in 1891 with the name Finnish Spitz. The Finish Spitz is Finland's national dog. |
| Names: The Finnish Spitz has two other common names given which are; suomenpystykorva (meaning Finnish cock-eared dog) and Finsk Spets (its original name in Swedish). Additionally, when the breed came to Great Britian in the 1920s, the British called it the Finkie. |
| Groups: The Finnish Spitz was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1991 and was accepted into the Non-Sporting Group. |
| Physical Characteristics: The Finnish Spitz can be anywhere between 15 ½ inches to 20 inches in height and it can weigh from 23 to 36 lb. The coat is a double with a short undercoat that is soft yet thick. The color of the coat varies with shades of golden-red on the outer coat while quite dull on the undercoat. |
| Care: This breed needs to be exercised daily whether with its owner or on its own playing outside in a protected area as they tend to run off. The Finnish Spitz will be fine as long as it's not too hot. It is fine with the colder weather. It needs to be brushed about two times a week unless it's shedding which it then needs to be brushed more often. Bathing isn't too stressed as it is a relatively oil free and clean breed. |
