| Overview: The English Toy Spaniel is a playful and friendly dog that gets along well with other dogs and pets. This dog is easy to train with little need for exercise. The English Toy Spaniel would make an excellent watchdog but wouldn't provide it's owners with very good protection. |
| Temperament: This dog is a proud breed that is often stubborn in its ways. However the English Toy Spaniel is playful and loyal as well as calm and quite. It is very receptive to being a lap dog. |
| History: The English Toy Spaniel has an early connection with the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel having been the same breed at one time. They were separated via selective breeding. This dog was given the name King Charles Spaniel during the 17th Century in England after King Charles II who loved this strain of dog. The English Toy Spaniel was bred to have a more rounded head and flatter nose so as to obtain a more appealing look for a lap dog. This dog wasn't known as the English Toy Spaniel until it was renamed by the Americans. |
| Names: The English Toy Spaniel can also be recognized as the King Charles Spaniel. |
| Groups: The American Kennel Club officially recognized the English Toy Spaniel in 1886 placing it into the Toy Group. |
| Physical Characteristics: This dog is more of a companion/lap dog than an active breed. While it does love to play, it doesn't have very much stamina or energy. This breed can withstand the cold relatively well, but doesn't like the heat. The English Toy Spaniel adult can range from 10 to 11 inches in height and can weigh 8 to 14 lb. This breed has a long coat that is either straight or has a little wave to it that comes in either Blenheim (a red and white color) or Ruby (a mahogany red with a little patch of white on the chest). There are two other colors, however the coats are longer than the previous two. These are the Prince Charles (tri-color) and the King Charles (black and tan coloring). The tail is often docked at 2 to 4 inches. |
| Care: With little need for exercise the English Toy Spaniel needs only a little bit of attention each day. This dog doesn't do well being away from its home or around heat as it has little resistance to it. It should be brushed about two times a week. |
