| English Pointers Information |
Overview: A breed with a lot of energy, the Pointer loves to exercise and play around. It is very affectionate towards its owner. This dog gets along well with other breeds and other animals. It is tolerant of strangers and doesn't mind a little attention from them. The Pointer is cooperative with training and likes to learn. It makes an excellent watchdog and can function well as a guard dog. Grooming is relatively easy as it doesn't need much. It is fairly resistant to both hot and cold environments. Temperament: With the stamina to play and run for hours on end, the Pointer requires a lot of exercise throughout the day. If this dog does not receive the amount of exercise needed, it could become destructive. Because it is always looking for signs of wildlife it often gets distracted. However when it is pointing at something it has found, its focus can't be broken. It may be too energetic to be around young children. History: First recorded in England during the 17th century, the Pointer was originally used for tracking hare, not birds. It would scout and find the prey while the Greyhound would take it out. During the 18th century, wing shooting became quite popular. The Pointer found itself being used to locate birds for the owner to shoot down. It is believed that the original Pointer was a mix of Greyhounds, Foxhounds, and Bloodhounds, with some type of older Spaniel. Over time different countries produced different types of Pointers. The larger Spanish Pointer was mixed with the English Pointer for best pointing performance, but didn't have as much agility. With the use of self-loading guns in the 19th century the slower Pointers became undesirable and the cross breeding stopped. Around the same time this breed was mixed with Setters to, perhaps, make the breed easier to train. Two Pointers were often used when hunting to find the exact location of the target by cross-referencing the directions the dogs were pointing. Though not among the most popular dogs for family pets, Pointers have been popular in the show ring, field trial competitions and as hunters. Names: The Pointer is also known as the English Pointer. Groups: The Pointer was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1884 and assigned to the Sporting Group. Physical Characteristics: The average adult Pointer can be 23 to 28 inches in height, and can weigh between 45 and 75 lb. The coat of this breed is short and thick with a sheen to it and the hair is smooth. The colors of the hair can be liver, lemon, black, and orange. Any of these colors can have white markings on the coat. Care: The Pointer needs at least an hour of daily exercise and activities to keep itself happy. It is best if it has access to the outdoors to run, play, and explore so as not to get bored. It can live outdoors in warm climates as long as it has shelter and a place to sleep. It does need social interaction, whether through humans or other dogs, daily. Occasional brushing is recommended to remove dead hairs. |
