| Overview: The Boykin Spaniel is native to the United States and has been dubbed the State Dog of South Carolina. This breed is typically friendly and eager to please. The Boykin is an avid swimmer and is a great working dog with ideal retriever instincts, endurance, and loyalty. It be easily trained to quarter and flush game. |
| Temperament: Developed by hunters for hunters, the Boykin Spaniel is a friendly, compliant, intelligent breed with good stamina. This charming canine learns quickly and is very receptive to training. Boykins love people and enjoy spending time with family and engaging in activities from hunting to playing fetch. This is a breed that gets along well with other dogs and enjoys playing with children. |
| History: The first known ancestor of the Boykin Spaniel breed stems from a stray dog found in the area of Spartanburg, South Carolina. A man named Alexander White brought the dog home and, discovering it had a talent for retrieving, gave the dog to his hunting partner, Whit Boykin, who was engaged in breeding experiments to develop a breed that would meet certain hunting requirements. Through selective breeding with other breeds, Boykin eventually found what he was looking for, an excellent turkey dog and waterfowl retriever. Today, the Boykin Spaniel is fast becoming a well-respected and popular hunting companion as well as beloved family pet. |
| Names: The Boykin Spaniel is known exclusively by that name. However, some people shorten it to simply Boykin. |
| Groups: One of the most recently recognized breeds by the American Kennel Club, the Boykin Spaniel was placed in the Sporting Group in 2009. |
| Physical Characteristics: Of medium, sturdy build, with a coat color of chocolate, liver or brown and wagging docked tail, the Boykin Spaniel stands from 14" to 18" high and weighs from 25 to 40 lb. The coat is of fine hair,medium length, curly. Some owners may elect to trim the coat short. Solid in color, a small white spot on the chest is acceptable. The medium length legs are strong aiding in both running and swimming. |
| Care: The Boykin Spaniel should be brought up as a family member. It can live indoors but should have access to an outside, fenced area. Its coat should receive weekly brushing. Boykins need daily human interaction and exercise to be at their happiest. |
