| Bernese Mountain Dog Information |
| Overview: The Bernese Mountain Dog is one of the varieties of Swiss mountain dog, also known as sennenhund, of which there are four. Though quite strong, they are a low energy dog but still require daily exercise. They are friendly, affectionate, and very easily trained. Cold weather is ideal for the “Berner” and it doesn’t do well in hot climates unless kept cool and indoors. |
| Temperament: Friendly, calm and easygoing are apt words for the Bernese Mountain Dog. This breed is very devoted to its family, loyal and a fairly good watchdog. However, it tends to be quite friendly toward other dogs, family pets and strangers. Moderately affectionate, they can make wonderful family pets. |
| History: The origination of the breed is not clear. Some researchers believe it dates back anciently to when Romans invaded the region now known as Swizterland. They brought with them their mastiffs which were cross-bred with local flock-herding dogs. The result was a hardy, strong, cold resilient breed that became a general pupose farm dog. The Bernese Mountain Dog was used for a variety of tasks including drover, draft dog and herder. By the late 19th Century, due to a lack of interest in purposely preserving the breed, its numbers were dangerously low. At that time, a Professor Albert Heim began promoting the breed and it gained in popularity. Introduced into the United States in 1926, it has grown in acceptance and is no longer in danger of being lost as a fine breed. |
| Names: The Bernese Mountain Dog is also known by the names Berner Sennenhund and Bernese Cattle Dog. |
| Groups: AKC recognized the Bernese Mountain Dog in 1937 placing it in the Working Dog Group. |
| Physical Characteristics: The square appearance of the Berner, its sturdy build, agility, strength and speed contribute to this breed’s common uses. The silky, thick straight or wavy coat provides adequate insulation from cold. It is a larger breed with height from 23" to 27.5" and weight from 70 to 120 lb. Females fit into the smaller sizes of these ranges. |
| Care: The Bernese Mountain Dog can live outside, even in the cold climates of which it is native. However, it needs human companionship, so it should not be abandoned to a yard. The coat needs regular brushing, two to three times per week and more often during periods of shedding. The Swiss have an expression that describes its life-span: "Three years a young dog, three years a good dog and three years an old dog. All else is a gift from God". |
