| Overview: The Bearded Collie is a trusted herding dog with long, flowing hair over its body and long facial hair. This breed can serve well as a watchdog. Bearded Collies are trainable, affectionate with their family members, friendly with both strangers and other pets. Their long coat aids in tolerance of colder weather, but they do well in warmer climates, also. High energy, playfulness and desire to exercise contribute to the active lifestyle need for this breed. |
| Temperament: Full of fun and enthusiastic, the Bearded Collie is sometimes thought of as exhibiting a clownish sense of humor. As a family pet, the Beardie is affectionate, playful and loves to be with its family. The in-bred herding instincts are strong, so it might attempt to herd small children. |
| History: It is believed that the Bearded Collie’s ancestors include breeds from Central Europe such as the Magyar Komondor and Lowland Polish Sheepdog. In the 19th Century, they were valued because of their herding abilities with both sheep and cattle and their great stamina working in rough, misty highlands of Scottland. Eventually, there was an interest in showing the breed and the dog was imported into the United States. Bearded Collies are still popularly used as working herders in addition to their show ring accomplishments. |
| Names: Bearded Collies are sometimes referred to as Beardies. Previously it was known as the Highland Collie. |
| Groups: Though one of the oldest of breeds out of Great Britain, it was not officially recognized by the American Kennel Club until 1976. It is a member of the Herding Group. |
| Physical Characteristics: The Bearded Collie stands 20" to 22" tall and weighs from 45 to 55 lbs. Its most obvious appearance feature is the long, straight and harsh outer coat which hides the soft undercoat. Beardies are strong, agile, quick turners with fast starting and stopping skills. Endless energy, drive and alertness aid this breed in its herding abilities. |
| Care: The in-bred energy of the Beardie requires it to burn it off with a fair amount of exercise each day. It can live outside in moderate climates, but prefers living inside with its family. The long, flowing hair needs regular brushing, three to four times per week. |
