Overview: The Presa Canario is a guard dog through and through. It will protect anything it is told to. It doesn't have a lot of trust for people it doesn't know, and if not trained properly, may be hostile towards others. The owner of this dog must stay in charge at all times to ensure the dog knows its place.

Temperament: The owner of a Presa Canario must show who is the boss at all times as should everyone who lives with it. If there is any slack in discipline with this breed it will become dominant and “in charge.” This breed is made for guarding, from its physical appearance to its capabilities of confronting and chasing off intruders. 

History: It is believed that one of the ancestors to the Presa Canario is the Bardino Majero, which is an extinct breed. It is also believed that the Bardino Majero was mixed with English Mastiffs that were imported to the Canary Islands. This mix was developed in the 1800's for the purpose of dog fighting. At one point dog fighting was very popular in European countries. Many breeds were developed just for dog fighting, the Presa Canario included. This breed went nearly extinct around by the 1960's because of a different importing of dogs and the banning of dog fighting. It was saved by an American veterinarian by the name Dr. Carl Semencic.

Names: There is no other name the Presa Canario is known by.

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Presa Canario can be about 21 to 25 inches in height and can weigh between 80 and 130 lb. The head of this breed is square and is almost as wide as it is long. The rump is slightly raised and the chest is broad. The bones are thick as is the skin. The coat of the Presa Canario is short and rough.

Care: Daily long walks are needed for this dog to stay in shape and to be happy. Never let this dog walk in front of you as it will think it is the leader. Also it is best if this dog has a sense of responsibility, such as guarding or watching over something, so that it feels it is of use. While it can live inside, it would be best if it has access to an outdoor area. It is mostly inactive while indoors. The coat of this dog is easy to groom, brushing when needed.
