Overview: The Llewellin Setter is an active hunting dog and playful breed, good with both adults and children. It usually enjoys playing outside with other pets and people and should be mild mannered inside. It needs exercise on a daily basis to stay content, also receiving enough human interaction to feel like it is wanted in the family. This gun dog exhibits both endurance and athletic abilities.

Temperament: A patient and good natured breed, the Llewellin Setter is friendly and calm with its family. It is great around children and protective of them. While indoors it is relatively inactive, however outside it is playful and likes to run. It should be trained early in life so it knows boundaries and how it should act. This dog will dig and jump often.

History: in Pembrokeshire, South Wales during the 1860's, Purcell Llewellin was interested in developing dogs that excelled in the field. He started experimenting with different mixes in trying to find the best features for this dog he had in mind. His breakthrough occurred when he was visiting a field trial in Shewbur a few years later. There he purchased two dogs named Dan and Dick. Both of these dogs were from the same mixed litter of an English Setter named Duke and a mix dam who was half Gordon Setter and half South Esk, named Rhoebe. Llewellin bred Dan and Dick with his Laverack females and the result was the Llewellin Setter. Today, there are several different strains recognized by different organizations. The two main divisions are the American Llewellins and Dashing Bondhu lines.

Names: There is no other name the Llewellin Setter is known by.

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Llewellin Setter is around 24 inches in height and should weigh around 50 lb. The coat is of medium length and is flat against the body.

Care: This dog should have a long, quick-paced walk once a day to stay happy and healthy. If it does not receive enough exercise it may become restless and mischievous, even destructive. An open area outside is recommended so it can run and play during the day. Combing its coat should occur a few times a week to remove any tangles and debris that may have gotten stuck in its coat. More attention to the coat is necessary when the dog is shedding to remove any dead hairs from getting stuck in the coat. The hair on the bottom of the feet and the nails should be trimmed when necessary.
