Overview: The Fila Brasileiro is a guard dog by nature. It will guard its family and the property unceasingly throughout the day and will alert its owner when there is someone it doesn't know coming. It can be a great guard dog, threatening anyone it doesn't trust and even going after people it sees as a threat to its master. It gets along well enough with other pets as long as it was raised with them. This dog would be ideal for protecting the home.

Temperament: As the Fila Brasileiro was bred to be a dog that would chase, hunt, and guard it is a powerful guard dog that doesn't hide its dislike of strangers. It is very common that this dog will threaten people it doesn't know, so much so that when presented in show it is advised that the judges are not to touch this dog when inspecting. It is known to be very loyal and dedicated to its family, however for some it may be over protective. It is not best to have this dog around a large amount of guests because of its protective nature. The Fila Brasileiro will go out of its way to even protect pets that are considered a part of the family. 

History: It is believed that the Fila Brasileiro was created through the breeding of many different dogs, mostly the Mastiff, Bulldog, and Bloodhound. This dog was raised primarily on plantations and cattle farms in Brazil. It was common to train this dog in running down animals including jaguars, and cattle, as well as running down escaped slaves and helping return them safely. The Fila Brasileiro would hold what it had caught by the neck until its master would come to claim what it had caught. When puppies of this dog are playing one can see these traits of chasing and grabbing. At one point there was a standard written up, however it was edited in 1946. It was put into the Paulistas hands to organize and fulfill the planned breeding programs. 

Names: The Fila Brasileiro is also known as the Brazilian Mastiff, or the Brazilian Molosser.

Physical Characteristics: The Fila Brasileiro is a molosser breed that has large bones with the skin loose on the body. The average adult will be about 23.5 to 29.5 inches in height and should weigh between 90 and 110 lb., the males being larger than the females. The coat of this dog is short and smooth.

Care: This canine should be taken on long walks daily to use up its energy. It is best if it lives in an area with a large open field to play in and get exercise. It doesn't do well being cooped up inside all day. It may appear to be a couch potato, however it needs to have access to the outdoors or it may begin to become destructive. It is easy to groom this dog. Simply brush it with a firm bristled brush every once in a while and wipe down with a towel to smooth its hair.
