Collie Information
Overview: The Collie is, in the United States, one the most readily recognized breeds because of the long running television series from the 1950s, Lassie. As a family dog, it is devoted, affectionate, playful and receptive to training. They make excellent watchdogs and to a limited degree can serve as protection dogs. The Collie is generally friendly toward other dogs, other pets and strangers. It can live in a variety of climates as it is relatively resistant to cold and heat.
Temperament: Gentle, loyal and well-mannered, the Collie is naturally responsive to humans and is very responsive to commands. Originally bred for herding and drover work, this breed is bright, intelligent and alert. Though it can be a bit stubborn at times, the Collie is willing to please and work hard at assigned tasks.
History: Used in the Scottish Highlands for several centuries as drovers, the Collie's actual history is obscure. Its name may be derived from the Gaelic word meaning useful. By the early 19th Century, both the rough-coated and smooth-coated varieties were found in the area. Most commonly, the rough-coated was either black and white or white. One dog, Old Cockie, is credited with introducing the sable color into the breed line. Around this time, Queen Victoria visited the area and enthusiastically began promoting the breed which resulted in significant growth of the Collie's popularity. Because of its beauty and elegant appearance people of the upper class were attracted to the breed for use as house pets and companion dogs. As herders immigrated to the United States, they brought the Collie with them and thus the dog became popular there. With the introduction of the Lassie movies and television shows, this rough-coated variety became both well known and prized as a family pet.
Names: The Collie is sometimes referred to as the Scottish Collie.
Groups: The American Kennel Club formally recognized the Collie in the year 1885 placing it in the Herding Group.
Physical Characteristics: The Collie is a relatively large breed standing 22 to 26 inches tall and weighing from 50 to 75 lb. It is graceful, active, strong and fast with the ability to quickly change direction and speed. Both the rough-coated and short-coated have generous, soft undercoats. Of course, the short-coated is short haired, the hair being hard and flat. The rough-coated Collie has generous amounts of long, straight hair especially around the mane and ruff.
Care: Daily exercise such as an energetic walk or jog with a leash or actual herding can meet the Collie's need for physical activity. Outdoor living in cool to temperate areas is doable, but this breed really enjoys living indoors with its family. The longer coated variety needs frequent brushing whereas the shorter coated variety needs minimal coat care.
