Overview: The Central Asian Shepherd Dog is a herding and guarding canine at heart. It will protect its surroundings and its family from anything it deems a threat. It can get along fine with other dogs as long as this dog is in charge. Other pets should be fine around this breed. Good with the family, this dog can make a great companion.

Temperament: This breed is calm and fearless. While good around people and family, the Central Asian Shepherd Dog should be supervised when around children as it may try to herd them. It may try to dominate over other dogs, and is wary around strangers, protecting its master when people it doesn't know are around. This dog enjoys barking at night. Usually gets along well with other pets, unless it is a dog that tries to dominate.

History: While not much is known of the origin of the Central Asian Shepherd Dog, it is believed to be at least 4000 years old and that the Tibetan Mastiff was one of the breeds used in the mix. The people that started the Central Asian Shepherd Dog breed were a nomadic group traveling through Russia, Iran, Afghanistan, and Siberia to name a few areas. This dog has been used to protect these nomads for centuries. Dogs that were similar to this breed had perhaps accompanied the Mongols in their invasion of central Europe, even used as protect dogs to herds in Europe. It is rare to see this breed outside of the Central Asian Republic, declining even in Russia. It is now beginning to be bred in the United States of America.

Names: The Central Asian Shepherd Dog is also known as the Central Asian Ovtcharka, Middle Asian Ovtcharka, Mid-Asian Shepherd, Central Asian Shepherd, Alabai, Sredneasiatskaia Ovtcharka, and the Turkmen Alabai.

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Central Asian Shepherd Dog can be 24 to 32 inches in height, and can weigh between 88 and 176 lb. It is seen as a large dog breed that is muscular with large bones. It may have docked ears and tail. The coat can be either long or short, and the skin may form wrinkles on the head.

Care: For exercise, a jog should do well. If it isn't taken for a jog, a long walk would also suffice. While it may appear lazy, the Central Asian Shepherd Dog can be very active and can achieve running speed in a second. This breed practically requires a large yard to guard as it needs a job to do. Small and restricted places can lead to behavior problems such as digging and chewing on things. Occasional brushing is needed with this canine to remove any dirt and branches that may have gotten tangled in the coat. The Central Asian Shepherd Dog sheds heavily during the spring and should be brushed often during this time.
