Overview: The Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog is a playful and loyal breed. It likes to be with its master and friends. It may be shy around strangers until it can learn to trust them. It is protective of its family. This breed needs a lot of exercise and a yard to play in. Coat care is minimal, and should be protected from cold climates.

Temperament: A protective and territorial breed, the Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog is both a guard dog and a loving friend to its family. History: The origin of the Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog isn't agreed upon and there are many facts missing. The State of Louisiana has been pinpointed as the breed’s area of origin, more specifically, Catahoula, Louisiana. This canine breed was appointed as Louisiana's state dog in 1979. At one point in time the Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog was used to round up escaped cattle in the woods and swamps. Usually in a group of three, this team of dogs would work together to retrieve the cattle. Some people would use this breed to hunt and tree raccoons, however this dog feels more in its element chasing larger animals.

Names: The Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog is also known as the Catahoula Leopard Dog, Catahoula Hog Dog, Catahoula Cur, or the Louisiana Catahoula Cur.

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog can be 20 to 26 inches in height, and will usually weigh between 55 and 80 lb. It has a broad chest and a flat head. The legs are strong boned. The coat is short and straight or coarse. The coloration of the coat varies, most often with merle patterns and patches of white.

Care: When this dog is not used for hunting purposes, it should be taken for a walk, jog, or even a run daily. When the Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog plays, it can be very noisy and rowdy. Some owners may need to train this dog how to play or it could injure someone or even itself. If there is not enough exercise to keep this dog happy, it may start getting destructive and loud. Living inside with access to a yard would be best for this dog. Cold weather doesn't suit this breed, and as such should not be left outside for long in cold climates. Brushing the coat once a week should be fine for its grooming needs, and a bath about twice a year unless otherwise needed.
