Cardigan Welsh Corgi Information
Overview: The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is set low to the ground, attributable to its very short legs, and is almost twice as long as it is tall. Affectionate, playful and moderately energetic, breed is easily trained and can be an excellent companion dog. It has excellent watchdog and guardian dog talents. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi tolerates well a variety of climates.
Temperament: Even-tempered, this Corgi loves to spend time with its family, is fun-loving, laid back and a well-mannered family dog. It tends to bark and is somewhat wary of strangers. Though the Cardigan Welsh Corgi is friendly toward other family pets, it does not readily accept other dogs and may be somewhat confrontational with them, a sign of their protection skills. This breed should never by shy or vicious.
History: It is believed that progenitors of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi came to Wales with the Celts as early as 1200 B.C. Originally, it was used as a family protection dog and helped with hunting. Eventually, its ability to help herd livestock was discovered and it took that task with enthusiasm. Rather than herding the animals, the Cardigan would drive the livestock by nipping at the heels of the cattle. When the Crown took control of the land, sold, divided and fenced it, the usefulness of Cardigan Welsh Corgi was limited, once again, to family companion, which was a luxury affordable by very few of the peasants. The breed became quite rare for some years. Through the efforts of some breed enthusiasts, the breed has increased in numbers and is recognized by major breed clubs.
Names: The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is known only by that name. Sometimes it is referred to as the Corgi with the tail.
Groups: The American Kennel Club officially recognized the Cardigan Welsh Corgi in 1935 as a member of the Herding Group.
Physical Characteristics: Standing 10.5 to 12.5 inches at the withers and weighing from 25 to 38 lb., the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is much longer than it is tall. Though close to the ground, it has a sturdy build and has power enough to run fast and endurance to work for lengthy periods. The tail is robust with hair and extends straight out from the body as it runs, otherwise it hangs toward the ground. The coat is dense, of medium length and can come in a variety of colors including red, sable, brindle, black, blue merle including white flashings.
Care: The Cardigan Welsh Corgi can live either inside or outdoors in temperate climate zones. It needs a fair amount of daily exercise which can be a vigorous play session or a leashed walk. Weather permitting, it should be allowed some outdoor time each day. Weekly coat brushing will help remove dead hair..
