Belgian Tervuren Information
Overview: The Belgian Tervuren is one of four herding dog breeds, all similar in structure, native to the country of Belgium. Common to all these breeds is their exceptional stock herding skills, ease of training, watchdog and guard dog talents. Like most shepherd breeds, they have a great amount of energy and require plenty of exercise. With training, they can be very good family dogs.
Temperament: Intelligent, active, playful, obedient and affectionate: these are attributes contributing to the Belgian Tervuren’s role as a family pet. Its need for daily mental and physical exercise cannot be over emphasized. This breed is happiest when herding or engaged in another form of work.
History: The Belgian Tervuren was one of several varieties of Belgian Shepherd dogs that eventually were divided into four distinct breeds. This breeds’ main distinguishing feature is its long, “anything but black haired” coat. The name Tervuren was chosen giving credit to the village name where one of the breed’s most avid advocates resided. This breed was less popular than others of its group. Introduced into the United States early in the 20th Century, it never caught on and died out in this country. However, its popularity has increased somewhat and its use remains primarily in herding sheep. The Tervuren is also valued as a service breed in such areas as therapy and guide dogs for disabled people.
Names: In addition to the name Belgian Tervuren, this breed is also called Tervuren, Chien de Berger Belge and even nicknamed Terv.
Groups: AKC recognized the Belgian Tervuren in 1959 placing it in the Herding Group.
Physical Characteristics: he elegant appearing and strong Belgian Tervuren stands 22" to 26" tall and weighs from 40 to 65 lb. Its coat can appear as a rich fawn to russet mahogany with black overlay. Some would say the dog appears to be proud in its appearance. Proportionally square, well-muscled, medium boned without bulkiness are additional descriptions for this breed.
Care: The Belgian Tervuren’s thick coat requires brushing at least twice each week. More frequent brushing is helpful when shedding. Adequate, arduous exercise every day is very important to this breed’s level of contentment. The breed does well living outside in cool to moderate climates but likes to sleep inside.
