Beauceron Information
Overview: Beaucerons, though bred to be herding dogs, have proven themselves to be excellent police and military canines. They are also known to be reliable watchdogs and protection dogs. Hailing from France, the history of this breed dates back to the 14th Century. Beaucerons are very intelligent as shown by their ability to learn tasks, memorizing and even using reason. Though they make good family dogs, they are not friendly toward other dogs, pets or strangers.
Temperament: This breed is like so many other herding dogs in that they are happiest when engaged in meaningful tasks. They are loving and loyal to their families along with being gentle and obedient. The Beauceron is neither fearful nor aggressive but rather well-balanced and self-confident. Also, they need firm training so as to be subservient to their masters.
History: Dating from the late 16th Century, the early breeding history of the Beauceron indicates that its ancestors were all of French descent. Some of its early uses were as general purpose farm dogs, guarding its family and herding both cattle and sheep. Although this breed was among the most commonly used sheepdogs in France, it was little known outside of its homeland. This canine was a valuable asset during World War II, even used in mine detection. Late in the 20th Century, its popularity spread to other countries with the establishment of Beauceron breed clubs.
Names: The Beauceron is also known by the names of Berger de Beauce, Bas-Rouge and Beauce Shepherd.
Groups: The AKC recognized this breed in 2007, assigning it to the Herding Group.
Physical Characteristics: At the shoulder, the Beauceron stands from 24" to 27 ½" and weighs from 65 to 85 lbs., making it the largest of the French sheepdogs. The medium length, dense outer coat is weather resistant and appears most often as black and tan, but other colors may be found. The body is strong, as are its jaws, and the dog moves fluidly. This breed can work for a full day, seemingly effortlessly, as it has excellent stamina.
Care: Beaucerons can make fine family dogs so long as the family commits to daily vigorous exercise with it. Without ample activity, it may become destructive as it attempts to work off its energy and boredom. They enjoy playing, are fairly affectionate and quite receptive to training. Though it loves the outdoors, living inside a home with its family is what it prefers. Brushing its coat once each week is adequate.
