Australian Cattle Dog Information

Overview:  The Australian Cattle Dog is recognized as a superior cattle herding breed. Not easily discouraged in its work, it is the perfect example of the phrase "dogged determination". Its high intelligence contributes to trainability. Abundant energy in this breed requires a good amount of exercise daily. They work well as watchdogs and can be used effectively as guard dogs. They can live outside in moderate climates. This breed can make a fine, loyal, playful family pet.
Temperament:  Australian Cattle Dogs are known to be very obedient and responsive to their owners’ demands. They are affectionate, but not overly so. A love to work is inbred, so it is wise to have daily activities to keep the mind and body engaged to avoid boredom. They love to play fetch and other games, generally get along well with other dogs and can be trained to accept other pets.
History:  The Australian cattle herders needed a problem addressed in the early 19th Century. With enormous areas open for cattle ranges, the ranchers needed a hardier and more tenacious breed of dog than previously used. In mid-century, a man named Hall cross-bred Dingos with smooth coated blue-merle Highland Collies resulting in what was called Hall’s Healers. Over the ensuing years, other ranchers added more breeds to the mix such as Dalmatian, Bull Terrier and the Black and Tan Kelpie. After about 60 years of experimentation, the final result became standardized and known as the Queensland Heeler, named after the Province in Australia where most were used. For over a century, this breed has been indispensable to the cattle industry of Australia.
Names:  The Australian Cattle Dog is also known as Queensland Heeler, Blue Heeler and Hall's Heeler.
Groups:   AKC recognized this breed in 1980 entering it into the Herding Group as its primary function is livestock herding.
Physical Characteristics:  Very similar in appearance to the Dingo, this medium sized dog stands 17" to 20" in height and weighs 35 to 45 lb. Its double coat is moderately short and of two color varieties: mottled blue or mottled red with the appearance of being speckled all over. The Queensland Heeler is strong with tremendous energy and stamina.
Care:  Weekly brushing to remove dead hair is good for this dog breed. Daily exercise both physically and mentally are very important to keep the dog happy and healthy. This goes beyond a simply walk on a leash. Running and playing games or some form of herding work are standard needs here. The Australian Cattle Dog is not meant to be an inside dog. This breed needs room to run and play and work.
