| Overview: The American Cocker Spaniel originated in the United States during late the 19th Century, derived from the English Cocker Spaniel. This moderately energetic breed is easily trainable, loves to play, is very friendly with humans and other animals and is very affectionate. Though they were originally bred as gun dogs for flushing and retrieving birds in the field, they are more popular today as family pets. |
| Temperament: Often referred to as the "merry cocker", this spaniel breed loves family life and enjoys pleasing its master. They are generally cheerful and show fondness for their owners and others. They are also have a sensitive nature and respond well to kind and gentle handling. Some of them tend toward barking which can make for good watchdogs. Their inquisitive instincts help them enjoy outings including both walks in the city and outings in country settings. |
| History: When the English Cocker Spaniel arrived in the United States, many Americans sought to breed the dog down in size for hunting game birds. Just how that was done is not recorded, but it is believed that other smaller spaniels were introduced into the line to obtain the desired result. Eventually, the breed became so popular that the American Kennel Club, AKC, divided it into three color classifications. These are solid black, particolor and ASCOB (any solid color other than black). Today, the American Cocker Spaniel is used less in hunting and engages more in the show ring competitions, spaniel field trials and simply living as wonderful family pets. |
| Names: Sometimes the designation American is dropped leaving the name as simply Cocker Spaniel. |
| Groups: AKC designates this breed a member of the Sporting Group. |
| Physical Characteristics: The smallest of the hunting spaniel breeds at about 13 ½ to 15 ½ inches at the shoulder, Cocker Spaniels are compact and sturdy. It has good stamina and can run quickly for fair distances. The silky coat can be either flat or wavy. The ears hang down well past the muzzle and the docked tail is on the short side but not stubby. |
| Care: The coat may be kept short for pets, but show dogs have longer, flowing coats that need brushing every two to three days and professional shaping and clipping three to four times per year. Cocker Spaniels are best kept indoors as family pets, played with regularly and exercised daily with long walks on a leash or other forms of exercise. For health purposes, eye and ear cleanliness should be checked regularly. |
