The schnoodle is a cross between a poodle and a schnauzer and is quickly becoming a very popular breed of dog. There are some breed associations that are starting to recognize the schnoodle as a breed to itstelf.
One of the things that make the schnoodle so popular is the fact that they are hypoallergenic and are easy on dog training. The schnauzer is known of its intelligence and ability to do such things as sniff out cancer in humans. Combined with the poodle, the schnauzer has the qualities that are sought after for a companion dog.
Schnoodle puppies usually have their tails docked and their dewclaws removed when they are only a few days old. Schnoodle puppies do not have their ears cropped. Some kennel associations say the schnoodle is nothing more than a mongrel but those who have the schnoodle for a pet know that they make great pets that are intelligent and very loving.
Schnoodle puppies may take on the coat characteristics of either the poodle or the schnauzer. The schnauzer tends to have a wiry coat where the poodle tends to have a soft, curly coat. Schnoodle colors are black, white, brown, grey, and apricot. On occasion they will take on the multi-colored coat which will resemble the coloring of a Doberman. Puppies of the same litter may each have different types of coats but you can be assured that they will not shed.
Frequent dog grooming is recommended to keep the schnoodle from matting. Because their hair grows long, it is probably best to keep them cut short during the warm months of summer. Daily brushing is also recommended to prevent mats from forming. Care should be paid to the schnoodle's ears because they tend to grow large amounts of hair in the ears. If left unattended, this can cause painful ear infections.
The schnoodle does not have a specific breed size but they will vary from 11 to 16 pounds. If a smaller, toy poodle is used they may even be smaller than 11 pounds. Often puppies will vary in size due to their diet but once they reach adulthood their size will regulate and stay at a steady weight.
Because of the intelligence and gentleness the schnauzer and poodle possess, the temperament of the schnoodle is very loving and gentle. They are very alert and can easily learn voice commands. They generally like to please their master and are very willing to obey commands.
The schnoodle is usually very healthy and has a life span of 9 to 12 years. They tend to have ear problems if the ears are not taken care of properly and they tend to gain weight if they do not get enough exercise. Since they love to spend time with their master they will gladly walk with you each day to get their exercise.
